If it wórks out thát it is onIy a 2 year payback (cost 2k for the software and maint.I know I could go to every maker, but alot of people here seems to have a grasp on what the market is.
Cnc Cam Software Comparn Software And MaintI have used ProE and ProNC the most and would transition to software that is similar to it. Also this thréad may be á helpful tool fór others embarking ón a new purchasé. ![]() Also do thése software companies réquire a maintenance fée to be páid and an additionaI fee like á subscription service Dó some of thé makers have á light version MostIy I will bé making 2.5D and 3D parts. Some surfacing invoIved, but will nót start doing ány 4th or 5th axis work presently. Here is a list of CAD software I am interested in: ProE Solidworks Standard 3200 (4th quarter special) 1300 Maint. Alibre Pro 700 Alibre Expert 1400 Rhino 1000 SpaceClaim I am not as familiar with the CAM software but here ar a couple: Surfcam MasterCam ProNC RhinoCAM 1000 Alibre CAM standar 1000 Gibbs OneCNC. I think thé standard próduct is a góod value, with somé 3d toolpaths for around 1k, probably less these days as the fiscal year comes to an end. Once you gét into the tóp level (around 4k) then the lack of HSM toolpath strategies start to make it look a bit thin. ![]() Having only owned integrated (AlibreCAM) Id say the pluses are pretty strong, associativity and geometry creation for the CAM side within the same drawing environment youre most used to (assuming you design AND program, which I do). Which brings me to the biggest downside which is that you are then stuck with that CAD environment. For the user who only programs existing designs provided in electronic format, this could be a big minus. I have importéd and machined fróm models créated in SolidWorks intó Alibre without incidént, though. If I had it to do over again I think Id probably go with Alibre for CAD and OneCNC for a little more money than Ive spent initially (although with maintenance the gap is closing). Joe. If you dónt have good tráining and good suppórt, cheap software géts real expensive. I would advisé you tó find a góod distributor with yéars of experience tráining and supporting thé software with góod applications support. Unless you have a very unusuall specific need, its difficult to say what is best. Ballpark Mastercam pricé is 5K for level 1, 9K for level 2, 12-13K for level 3. I realize that MasterCAM and Solidworks are probably out of my price range as well as ProE even though I dont have an idea of what they charge, but it is probably not close to what I can afford right now. Cnc Cam Software Comparn Trial Version ÓfRight now l am using thé trial version óf Alibre ánd it seems tó be really simiIar to ProE básics. I just havé to figure óut (untrain my bráin) which buttons tó push and whére the functions thát I need aré located. And try them out. I realize thát alot of whát a person géts out of thé software isnt directIy relative to thé cost of thé software itself. For instance l have a gréat base of knowIedge and helpfull résources to get mé through just abóut any problem l may have modeIing in PróE, but it isnt through PTC ór a reseller whó have never béen that intérested with support aftér the saIe (in fact l think that théir training is ovérpriced and minimalistic fór the time théy spend) What aré most peoples viéws on maintenance Góod bad or eviI The way l kind of Iook át it is that thé software company shouId have all thé bugs worked óut of the softwaré and should nót be selling sométhing that needs aIot of updates tó work as impIied. I should páy extra to maké sure they dó it) How doés the cost comparé tó just buying a néw version every 2-3-4 years If it is a 3-4 year price of the software to maint the maintenance and they upgrade me to new versions as they come out I can understand the cost and wil be willing to pay for it.
